General
Tranquilo! (Easy) is the motto of the Nicaraguans (Nicas). Nicaragua has a tropical climate, but it’s a bit cooler and more pleasant in the highlands. The country is known for its excellent coffee. Visit also the colonial cities of Leon and Granada and enjoy the beautiful nature, volcanoes and beaches. Try the typical Gallo Pinto while enjoying the local beer Toña!
Nicaragua is not your average holiday destination since many people associate the country with left wing guerilla’s, insecurity, and violence. This is a gross misunderstanding, because Nicaragua is nowadays one of the safest countries in the Americas. Elections are sometimes followed by social unrest, but this never causes unsafe situations for tourists. However, do be aware of your safety in the border areas and don’t go around the larger cities unaccompanied in the dark.

Money
Nicaragua’s currency is the Cordoba. 21,75 Cordoba equals 1 USD (October 2010). In almost all major cities it’s possible to withdraw money (Cordoba as well as USD) with your debit/credit card. There are a few tourist destinations where this is not possible, like the popular surfing beaches on the Pacific and on Isla Ometepe. It’s best to check this in advance and always carry sufficient cash (in small bank notes). Credit cards can be used in the bigger supermarkets in the cities and restaurants and hotels.

Visa
European travelers do not need to purchase a visa before departure. Upon arrival at the airport you will pay about 5 USD for a visa up to 90 days. Please note that your passport needs to be valid at least for 6 months from the date of return.
Nicaragua tourist visa is not required for citizens of United States and Canada for a stay up to 90 days.
