Antigua is Guatemala’s best preserved colonial city and has become a major tourist attraction with its colorful houses, numerous bars and restaurants and lively markets. Antigua is also ‘the place to be’ to learn Spanish, a large number of language schools have opened their doors here.
In the past, Antigua has been destroyed by earthquakes and volcano eruptions several times and rebuilt in different locations. From every street corner in town you can see one of the three volcanoes that surround Antigua; in the south the volcano Aqua (water), in the west the Acetenango and Fuego (fire).
The town is turned upside down during Semana Santa, or Easter. Everyone either plays a parts or watches the processions depicting the last days of Jezus Christ and the colorful ‘alfombra’s’ are wonderful to see.
Hotel
You will stay in a nice colonial style hotel which used to be a museum. Enjoy a delicious traditional breakfast on the patio in front of your room.
Activities
Antigua is a great city to explore on foot. Visit the local market and taste the exotic fruits. Meet the locals at the fountain in the park in the center and pay a visit to Casa Santo Domingo, an impressive monastery museum, nowadays a luxury five star, award winning hotel. The city is also an excellent base to explore the area. We recommend a walk on the Pacaya, an active volcano one hour away from Antigua. In the late afternoon or early evening you can see the lava flowing down just a few meters from where you’re standing, an unforgettable experience!
