Wild Nature
- Costa Rica
BIRDS AND CLOUDS
Destination 1, Caño Negro
North of the Arenal volcano and near the border with Nicaragua, you find the village of Caño Negro surrounded by sugarcane fields, orange and pineapple plantations. In 1991, the nearby nature reserve Caño Negro was called a ‘Wild Life Area of International Importance’ because it’s considered one of the most important wetlands in the world. It’s one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot birds, alligators and small monkeys. You can come really close to the animals because they don’t see humans as an enemy, since hunting is prohibited here. A visit to Caño Negro will be an absolute highlight for every nature lover. Hotel You will stay in your own bungalow surrounded by tropical vegetation at a stone’s throw from the reserve. Activities Via the hotel you can rent a kayak to explore the wetlands. You can also go out with a small motor boat accompanied by guide. Destination 2, Rincon de la Vieja
From Cano Negro you will continue to Rincon de la Vieja or ‘the corner of the old woman’. This unusual definition refers to Curubande, the daughter of an Indian chief who lived the last years of her life as medicine woman on the flank of the volcano which now is called Rincon de la Vieja. The volcano had no less than nine craters, it’s still active and known for its bubbling mud pools at its foot. Hotel You will spend the night in a magnificent mansion a few miles away from the volcano. Be sure to pay a visit to the natural spa (including mud pools) and enjoy the stunning nature around the house. Activities Visit the National Park Rincon de la Vieja, where you can follow the trails through the dry forest. The region is also perfect for long horseback rides. If you are you more into sports, go tubing in the nearby river.
