Tropical Beach - Costa Rica

CARIBBEAN

Destination 1, Playa Cocles

The Carribean Coast is historically home to the Jamaicans who landed in Costa Rica to work on the Atlantic Railroad. In those days coffee beans were transported by train from the capital San Jose in the Central Valley to the port city of Limon at the coast. If you visit the region now, everything is above all ‘tranquilo’ and absolutely nobody is in a hurry. So take your time to get to know your surroundings, have a chat with the locals, and enjoy the beautiful beaches and wonderful food.

You drive to Playa Cocles, a small coastal village popular with surfers and backpackers with that typical laid back Afro-Caribbean atmosphere reflected by its wooden houses in bright colours and reggae music that meets your ear as soon as you enter the main street.

Hotel

You’re home for the next two days is a small, but comfortable near-the-beach-resort. The ocean you'll find across the road from the resort and at the resort premises there's a nice pool as well. Enjoy your dinner at the poolside restaurant or drive to nearby Puerto Viejo de Limon to sample the local cuisine.

Activities

Visit the Cahuita National Park, a stunning peninsula where you’ll find deserted beaches and coves. Here you can swim, surf, snorkel and also dive. If you’re lucky you’ll spot some dolphins! In the park there’s a good chance you’ll see monkies, birds, sloths, iguanas and raccoons.
Another option is to discover the little villages by bike, go shopping, take a massage and stock up on real rasta gadgets!

Destination 2, Manzanillo

From Playa Cocles it’s just a 15 minute drive to your next destination; Manzanillo, the most southern village before entering Panama (the road literally stops here!). In Manzanillo you’ll find pristine beaches and the atmosphere here just urges you to only slow down and relax for a few days enjoying tropical cocktails while listing to reggae music from your hammock.

Hotel

You spend the next two nights in a beautiful wooden bungalow in the middle of the jungle. In the morning the howler monkeys will wake you up and you’ll make breakfast in your own kitchen or walk to a restaurant close to the beach for your first cup of coffee.

Activities

The beach, just 50 meters away from your bungalow, is the perfect destination for a relaxed day in the sun, but you can also explore the region by bike or hike south towards the Panamanian border.

A recommended day tour is a visit to the nearby Bribri Indian reserve. The Bribri is one of the last remaining Indian tribes in Costa Rica that live a traditional life. See and learn more about how they use these traditions when making medicine, but also jewelry for instance.
