If you choose for this package, you will visit the Indian reserves located at the border of Costa Rica and Panama and you will spend the night here. This is a unique way to get in contact with the indigenous communities and to learn more about their traditional customs and habits. You will be accompanied by a guide for four days. DAY 1 Destination: In the morning you will leave with your own car to the village Carbón Dos de Talamanca in the mountains of the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Stay: You will stay in Casa Calateas, a large wooden bungalow in Caribbean style in the middle of the jungle. Your comfortable room has a private bathroom. Activities: Once you have arrived you will go on guided hike to get to know your surroundings, this will be brisk walk of around three hours. The local guide will tell you more about the local flora and fauna of the region. With a bit of luck you will find toucans, snakes, birds, frogs and sloths, a wonderful trip! In the afternoon you will drive to an organic cacao plantation. Here they will give you a extensive tour during which you will learn everything about the process of turning cacao beans into chocolate. Of course you can try and taste along the way! You will also visit the nearby village and learn more about the (rural) life. DAY 2 Destination: De next day you head to the Indian reserve of the Bri Bri tribe, one of the few indigenous tribes left in Costa Rica. Stay: The next two nights you will sleep in a traditional wooden bungalow. Activities: Today you will go on a canoe trip on the river Yorkin, which forms the natural border between Costa Rica and Panama and is much used by the local population to transport merchandise, food and passengers. Your final destination is an Indian village in the jungle where you will get more information about how cacao is used in birth ceremonies and healings. DAY 3 Activities Today you will visit the Indian community Guaymi de Agua de Salud just across the border in Panama. It’s a tough walk of around four hours to get there (and four hours back again). You will pass cacao and banana plantations and follow the river Yorkin. Once you have arrived the local villagers will tell you more about the traditional customs and habits of the Guaymi, in particular about their clothes and handicrafts made of natural materials. DAY 4 Activities You will leave early by boat to the village of Bambu and drive with your own car to the border town Sixaola. From here you will enter Panama via an old iron railroad bridge. The bridge was used to transport bananas from Panama to Costa Rica. You will continue to the village of San San. Your guide will tell you more about the area and take you on a relaxing boat trip down the river. On route you will stop at a platform to wait quietly until the manatees which are living in this area show up…. The guide will explain you everything about the manatees and their natural habitat. You will sail further to La Lata, to the Aamvecono Inn for a delicious Caribbean lunch. After, you will sail back to San San and return to the border to pick up your rental car.
