Wild Nature - Guatemala

LAKE ATITLAN

Destination 1, Santiago Atitlan

At a 2,5 hours drive from Guatemala City of Antigua in the Guatemalan Highlands you find paradise. This mystic place is called Lake Atitlan, Atitlan meaning ‘where the rainbow gets its colors’. Surrounded by three volcanoes Atitlan, Toliman and San Pedro, the shores of this beautiful lake are home to authentic Mayan villages where you will experience the real Guatemala.

Santiago Atitlan is an authentic, small village with a bustling market and a few bars. The original inhabitants of Santiago are the Tzutujil Mayas. Although Spanish rule has ensured that Catholicism reached the villages around Lake Atitlan, Mayan traditions are still honored. One of the most visible is Maximom, who has been the grandfather and guardian of the villages for centuries. The wooden statue moves every year to another family in the village and the locals will make sure that he always will have a cigar to smoke and a glass of rum to drink.

Hotel

Your hotel is located just outside the village of Santiago and you will sleep in comfortable bungalows with a fireplace when it gets chilly. Sign up for a massage or relax in the sauna in the tropical garden. From the pool and jacuzzi you have a stunning view over the lake. Besides, the hotel has an excellent restaurant and a great wine list. Enjoy!

Activities

Take a tuk-tuk to Santiago, stroll along the market stalls and look for Maximom! Ask the hotel for more information regarding horseback riding and hikes in the mountains around the lake or rent a boat to explore the other villages around the lake.

Destination 2, San Marcos La Laguna

You will sail by boat to your next destination San Marcos La Laguna. This is the quietest town on the lake and has almost turned into a wellness centre. You can take Swedish or Shiatsu massages or participate in yoga or meditation classes. In addition, you’ll find nice restaurants, bars and the locals are very friendly. The ultimate place to relax!

Hotel

You will stay in a great hotel, where the artistic vision of the owner is uniquely combined with environmental sustainability. The result is a couple of beautiful rooms, all with breath-taking views on the lake.

Activities

As mentioned, San Marcos is a great place to relax and reflect and to enjoy massages and meditations. By boat you can reach the other villages easily.
