Rural Life - Nicaragua

NORTHERN DELIGHT

If you choose this package you’re in for an unforgettable Edventure during which you will explore the north of Nicaragua, the jungle and the coffee plantations around the city of Matagalpa. You stay with local families and the facilities will be basic. However, the houses are clean and your host families have experience with foreign guests and provide mosquito nets and water filters if needed. The luggage that you don’t need the next four days can be stored in Matagalpa. The most of the days you will be transported by car, and don’t forget to bring your camera, binoculars and water.

DAY 1
Destination:

You arrive in the northern city of Matagalpa and will continue your way to La Pita, the village where you will spend your first night. Here is fair trade coffee growing, cultivated by a local cooperative.

Stay:
You stay in simple rooms (beds with mosquito nets) with private bathroom. In the morning the host family will serve you a traditional Nicaraguan ‘campesino’ or farmer’s breakfast.

DAY 2
Destination:
On your first hike (4 hours, slightly rising and falling), you will pass large coffee plantations on the way to the village of La Corona. With your guide you will go visit a local farm and then go to a beautiful waterfall for a swim.

Stay:
You will stay with a local family in the village La Corona.

DAY 3
Destination:
The next morning, you hike for two hours through open fields with traditional crops such as corn and beans. The last part of your journey to the final destination, the magnificent mountains Peñas Blancas, you’ll drive by 4WD. Measuring 8 square miles, Peñas Blancas is the largest protected rain forest in Central America.

Stay:
In the village of the same name, Peñas Blancas, you will stay in an eco-hostel (you will sleep in bunk beds and the night can be chilly), managed by the local cooperative Guardiansa del Bosque. Peñas Blancas is a small community of about 20 families, situated in beautiful natural surroundings, welcome in paradise!

DAY 4
Destination:
Today you will go deeper into the jungle of the Peñas Blancas mountain, which is a part of the Bosawas biosphere reserve. The walk takes about 4 to 5 hours and is quite heavy. The mountains (tropical rainforest and cloud forest) are very rugged and beautiful here. The area is still inhabited by small groups of, especially coffee, famers. During the hike you will walk along an impressive waterfall where you can swim and refresh. After the trip we drive back by car to Matagalpa. This night you will stay in Matagalpa again, before going to Granada the next morning.

DAY 5
Destination:

Transfer to Granada.
