Destination, Corcovado

Corcovado National Park is located in the south of the peninsula Osa and is one of Costa Rica’s most remote nature reserves. This unique piece of tropical rainforest is one of the top 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world. Here you find animals such as the scarlet macaw, tapir, puma, jaguar and the ocelot which are hardly found in their natural environment in other parts of Costa Rica.

Hotel

You will spend three nights in an eco lodge at the edge of the Corcovado National Park. The trip to the lodge is an adventure itself. From the town of Puerto Jimenez, located at the tip of the Osa peninsula, you will drive by 4x4 through the jungle and you will cross small rivers until the village Carate, where the road ends. From here you will continue your journey by foot along the beach to the lodge. This will be a walk of 45 minutes (your luggage will be transported by horse).

You’re staying in luxury tents (with a wooden base) and from your hammock you’ll have a magnificent view of the Pacific (and stunning sunsets!). In the lodge there is also a restaurant and a bar. In the exotic garden you will regularly spot monkeys and colorful macaws.

From the lodge you can walk to the national park. Corcovado is a must for anyone who loves adventure and the jungle. A part of the park was once cleared for the cultivation of bananas, but has given back to nature again. Today, you still will see overgrown banana trees, from which the monkeys and coatis feed themselves with the fruits.
 

Activities

It’s possible to make a trek to the ranger station La Sirena, 11 miles away. You can stay overnight, but the facilities are basic (limited number of rooms, with bunk beds) and are often used by local researchers. If there’s no room, then take your own tent and food with you. If you like adventure, this is your chance!
