Colourful Culture - Guatemala

UNEXPECTED SURPRISE

Destination 1, Rio Dulce
The river Rio Dulce, flows from Lake Izabal to the Caribbean Sea in the east of Guatemala and was once the gateway for the Spaniards arriving in Central America. Nowadays the area is a unique destination for nature lovers. A visit to the Rio Dulce National Park is a must, particularly for bird watchers. You will experience local culture and cuisine in Livingston, a town only accessible by boat, which is populated by the Garifuna from Africa who ended up here. In Livingston you get a taste of the typically laid-back Caribbean atmosphere, so relax in a hammock with a local beer and try to learn to dance the ‘punta’.

Hotel
You will stay in a beautiful eco-hotel which is a part of a large nature reserve and also includes an organic farm and a port. Enjoy a morning swim in the pool and a delicious breakfast.

Activities
You definitely have to visit the nature reserve Rio Dulce and the town of Livingston. Besides, there is plenty to do around your hotel, hike through the jungle or make a cruise by sailboat.

Destination 2, Copan
Most tourists visit the Mayan ruins of Tikal. However, from Rio Dulce you can continue your trip to the less known, but equally impressive ruins of Copan, just at the other side of the border in Honduras. Here you will find the ruins of the former Maya kingdom Xukpi.
Most of the remaining monuments were built between 400 and 800 AD. After 900 AD the Mayan civilization disappeared almost completely and the population decimated. The region was virtually inhabited until the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century.
A short walk away from the ruins, you find the village of Copan Ruinas which is a nice and cozy place with friendly people and good restaurants and cafes.

Hotel
You will stay in a small hotel with an excellent restaurant and bar. A perfect place from where you can visit the ruins, but also can explore the rest of the area.

Activities
One or several visits to Copan are a must. The natural surroundings both in Guatemala and Honduras are stunning and worth exploring.
