UNSPOILED NATURE
Destination 1, Sabalos, Rio San Juan The river Rio San Juan connects the immense Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean Sea. Large areas along the river are protected nature reserves and a paradise for waterfowl and fish. The pristine nature and historical attractions along the river make the region an attractive tourist destination, but one that so far has remained mostly undiscovered. The laidback town of San Carlos is the gateway to the rest of Nicaragua, but also the starting point for journeys to the Caribbean coast. Here you will find a few nice restaurants and in a little bar along the newly built promenade you can enjoy a fresh juice while listening to salsa music. Hotel Sabalos Lodge is a comfortable eco-lodge, owned by a Nicaraguan family. Your bungalow is built on poles and has a private bathroom, beds with mosquito nets and a hammock on the balcony from which you have a wonderful view over the river San Juan. Activities Sail to the fortress El Castillo de Imaculada Incepcion or rent a kayak and explore the peaceful tributaries of the Rio San Juan. From the hotel you can make jungle hikes. A visit to the nearby Los Guatusos nature of the Reserva Indio Maiz are definitely worth it. You can spot birds, monkeys and beautiful colored poisonous frogs during a walk through the dense jungle! Destination 2, San Fernando, Solentiname Solentiname consists of 36 small islands in the south of the immense Lake Nicaragua, near to the Rio San Juan and thus the border of Costa Rica. The islands are a true hidden paradise where natural serenity is combined with extraordinary creative activity. It was the famous Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardenal who recognized the artistic talents of the local farmers and encouraged their development. Their typical colorful, primitive style of painting has now become well known in Nicaragua and the rest of the world. Hotel You will spend the night in a simple ‘cabina’ on the edge of the island of San Fernando. Most of your time however, you will probably spend in a rocking chair or hammock on the veranda of the hotel. Enjoy a beautiful sunset while getting acquainted with the friendly owners and you will feel like you’ve found a new home. Activities Sail to the island Mancorron and visit the artists’ colony here. Via Edventure you can book a tour and support the artists directly. Children can create their own Solentiname art work. For more information about this project, please contact us.
