Destination 1, Ometepe

The island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua is formed by two large volcanoes, Concepcion and La Madera. The word Ometepe means two (ome) mountains (tepe). The island has a turbulent history, the first inhabitants where the Nahua Indians from Mexico, followed by the Niquirano. Indians who build a significant settlement. Nowadays, you can still admire their impressive ruins.

After the Spaniards settled down in Central America in the 16th century, the islands in Lake Nicaragua where plagued by pirates, who sailed onto the lake via the river San Juan. Today, the two main villages on the island are Alta Gracia and Moyogalpa. Many traditions are still alive and nowhere else in Nicaragua the locals celebrate so many religious and cultural festivals.

Stay

You will spend the night in a simple but comfortable eco-hotel. Relax in a hammock on your balcony or rent bikes to explore the area.

Activities

The development of ecotourism in really important in Ometepe. Therefore there are plenty opportunities to discover the island by foot and by bike. You can also rent a kayak and go around the island or climb one of the volcanoes (or both) which is a must on clear days.

Destination 2, San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a small town on the Pacific coast in the south west of Nicaragua. Thanks to its beautiful beaches it has become a popular holiday destination for both local and foreign tourists. Fortunately, the region is still relatively untouched.

Stay

You will spend the night in a bungalow with a view at maybe the most beautiful beach of Nicaragua; Playa el Coco.

Activities

You can spend the day relaxing on the beach or go sailing, surfing or fishing if you like a bit more action. A must is the ‘turtle tour by night’; you will go to the La Flor beach to spot giant sea turtles lay their eggs. In the months July to January turtles come ashore in large numbers (sometimes thousands at a time) to lay their eggs, a truly unforgettable spectacle.

- Daytour, consisting of a island tour (light), climbing of the volcano Maderas (heavy) of Concepcion (really     heavy)
