Destination, Granada Historically, Granada always has been one of Nicaragua’s most important cities, economically and also politically. Today this beautiful colonial town is the Nicaragua’s most famous tourist destination, although mass tourism is still an unfamiliar concept. Granada was established by Fransisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524 and is the oldest city in the Americas. The city was named after the Spanish city of Granada, but is also known as ‘Gran Sultana del Gran Lago’ or the Great Sultan of the Great Lake, because of its strategic location at the shore of Lake Cocibolca.
Granada has an illustrious past of wars and was attacked by British, French and Dutch pirates. There are a number of historic forts left which are now possible to visit. Granada’s rival in the struggle for economic and political power has always been that other colonial city Leon; home to the liberals (Granada was predominantly conservative). Finally, as a compromise, Managua was therefore chosen as Nicaragua’s capital
